The need for integrity along supply chains

Our world is facing multiple crises these days: fragile democracies and growing authoritarianism, geo-political insecurity, accelerating climate change and rapid loss of biodiversity. At the same time, the pandemic has shown how fragile and unsustainable our global supply chains are when it comes to providing people with the services and goods they need to secure health, nutrition and energy. Especially in poorer countries, large populations are threatened by a massive loss of welfare. Corruption and a lack of integrity can be found at the heart of many of the disruptions and institutional failures to deal with them efficiently. Due to the cross-border implications of unsustainable and unfair supply chains a growing number of countries and the EU have been setting up legal instruments with extraterritorial application that aim at ensuring social and environmental standards along global supply chains. In the light of the complexity of the associated challenges, to be compliant, actors are encouraged by legislators to engage in multi-stakeholder partnerships and collective action.

Pursuing a partnership-based approach

The event will primarily focus on the actors in the Global South, who are suffering particularly from global developments with rising poverty rates and precarious working conditions, especially for women, and who are supposed to benefit from new German and European regulatory measures for increased sustainability and ethical business practices in supply chains.
The conference will showcase how a partnership-based approach together with the Global South can help meet the requirements of laws and standards on transparency along supply chains, anti-corruption, human rights, and environmental due diligence. Fostering sustainable and practicable solutions together with the suppliers and their stakeholders in the Global South is therefore key. In this sense, the role of the different stakeholders, the challenges they face and the practical solutions they have come up with, within the network of the Alliance for Integrity and beyond, will be shared and discussed.
